Book an AppointmentSedation Options We Offer
Nitrous Oxide
Laughing Gas
The mildest and most common option. Your child breathes a gentle mix of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nose mask. They stay fully awake and comfortable, feel relaxed and warm, and recover within minutes of removing the mask. Perfect for mildly anxious kids or longer procedures.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Relaxation Medicine
A liquid or pill medication given before the appointment that makes your child deeply relaxed and often sleepy, though they remain conscious. They'll have little to no memory of the procedure. Ideal for moderate anxiety or children who need more complex treatment.
IV Sedation
Deep Sedation
Administered intravenously for deeper sedation. Your child is in a sleep-like state and feels nothing. Dr. Doll has specialized training in IV sedation and follows strict AAPD safety guidelines throughout the procedure. Used for extensive treatment or high-anxiety patients.
General Anesthesia
Hospital Dentistry
For very young children or those with significant special needs, we can coordinate treatment under general anesthesia at an accredited surgical facility. Dr. Doll works alongside an anesthesiologist to complete all necessary treatment in a single visit.
Safety Is Our Top Priority
All sedation at Boardwalk Pediatric Dental is administered in full compliance with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) guidelines. Dr. Doll is trained in pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and emergency protocols. Vital signs are monitored throughout every sedation procedure.
Before any sedation, we conduct a thorough health history review and provide complete written pre- and post-op instructions. We want you informed and confident every step of the way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is sedation dentistry safe for kids?
Yes — when administered by a board-certified pediatric dentist like Dr. Jimmy Doll who has specialized training in all sedation levels. Boardwalk follows strict AAPD (American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry) safety guidelines, including continuous monitoring of your child's heart rate, oxygen levels, and breathing throughout the procedure.
Will my child be unconscious during sedation?
It depends on the sedation level. Nitrous oxide keeps kids fully awake and relaxed. Oral sedation makes them drowsy but still conscious. IV sedation puts them in a deep sleep-like state. General anesthesia is full unconsciousness and only used in hospital settings for very complex cases.
How do I prepare my child for sedation?
Dr. Doll's team will give you specific pre-op instructions, but generally: no food or drink for several hours before the appointment for oral/IV sedation, arrange a ride home, and plan for your child to rest the remainder of the day.
Does insurance cover sedation dentistry?
Many dental insurance plans cover sedation when it is medically necessary. Our team will verify your benefits before the appointment and let you know exactly what to expect cost-wise.
