Pediatric Tooth Extractions in Farmington, UT

When a tooth needs to come out, we make it as gentle and stress-free as possible. Dr. Doll is a board-certified pediatric dentist with extensive experience keeping kids calm through procedures.

When Is an Extraction Necessary?

Dr. Doll always tries to save a tooth first. But sometimes extraction is the best path forward for your child's overall oral health. Common reasons include:

  • Severe decay that has reached the pulp and can't be restored
  • A baby tooth that hasn't fallen out and is blocking the permanent tooth
  • Dental trauma that has damaged a tooth beyond repair
  • Orthodontic treatment requiring additional space
  • Infection that hasn't responded to treatment
  • Crowding that requires removal to allow proper alignment

How We Keep Kids Comfortable

The biggest fear around extractions isn't the procedure itself — it's the anticipation. Dr. Doll's entire team is trained in pediatric behavior management. We explain everything at a child's level, use distraction techniques, and never rush a child who isn't ready.

For anxious children, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to take the edge off. For children who need deeper relaxation, oral sedation and IV sedation are available. The goal is for your child to leave without a story to tell — and to not be afraid of the dentist the next time.

After the Extraction

Most pediatric extractions heal quickly. We'll send you home with post-care instructions and Dr. Doll's personal cell number if you have concerns. If a space maintainer is needed, we'll discuss that at the same appointment so your child's permanent teeth develop on track.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a tooth extraction hurt?

We use local anesthetic to numb the area completely before any extraction. Most kids feel pressure but no pain during the procedure. For anxious children, we offer nitrous oxide and oral sedation to make the experience calm and comfortable.

When does a baby tooth actually need to be pulled?

Usually when decay has reached a point where the tooth can't be saved, when it's blocking an incoming permanent tooth, or in preparation for orthodontic treatment. Dr. Doll always recommends saving teeth when possible — extraction is a last resort.

What should my child eat after an extraction?

Soft foods for the first 24 hours — yogurt, applesauce, smoothies, mashed potatoes. Avoid hot, hard, or chewy foods. No straws for the first 24 hours.

Will my child need a space maintainer after a baby tooth is removed?

Sometimes. If a baby tooth is removed before the permanent tooth is ready to come in, a space maintainer holds the gap open so surrounding teeth don't drift and crowd out the adult tooth. Dr. Doll will let you know if one is needed.
